Dear Friends,
Around this time of year the Church keeps Lammastide — the “loaf-mass,” when our forebears brought bread baked from the season’s first ripe grain and offered it in thanksgiving to God. It marks the very beginning of harvest, the first fruits of the fields.
There is deep wisdom in this old tradition. Before the harvest is fully gathered, before we know how the year will end, we pause to give thanks for what has already been given. Gratitude comes first.
It is easy to wait until everything is complete before we are thankful — until the job is done, the worry resolved, the future secure. Lammas teaches us another way: to bless God for the first loaf, and to trust the rest into his keeping. “You crown the year with your bounty,” sings the psalmist (Psalm 65:11).
As the fields around us turn golden, let this be a season of thanksgiving. Notice the small first fruits in your own life — an unexpected kindness, a moment of beauty, daily bread on the table — and offer them back to God with a grateful heart.
